The Role of Sound in SCANA™

Sound has been woven into SCANA™ from its earliest development and continues to evolve alongside the framework.

While SCANA™ can be implemented across diverse educational settings, the integration of structured sound practices serves as a distinctive and engaging element of its delivery. Within the Navigating cycle, sound becomes a study of emotional awareness. Students explore how vibration, rhythm, and tone reflect internal states — learning to identify and navigate emotions through guided listening and structured reflection.

Instruments are approached as both tools and works of art. Through observation and inquiry, students engage with sound as a bridge between regulation and creative exploration.

Sound is also used to intentionally open and close learning sessions. These brief, structured moments support transition, focus, and shared presence — reinforcing the language and skills introduced through SCANA™.

In SCANA™, sound is not required for implementation, but when integrated, it deepens engagement and offers a uniquely embodied pathway into regulation and reflection.

What is SCANA, and the SCANA framework.

SCANA is a structured, educator-designed framework that supports self-regulation, communication, awareness, navigation of physical and emotional experiences, and advocacy. Integrated into workshops and school environments, SCANA strengthens confidence, collaboration, and academic readiness across entire learning communities. SCANA was written and applied by Ashley Cantor-Birnbaum beginning in 2016 when she was an independent contractor @ the Met. Since then SCANA has evolved across environment, and individual.

The SCANA Skills Program

The SCANA Skills Program expands the framework into an arts-education transition model that celebrates artists with disabilities and bridges connections between students and museum institutions and the broader creative sector.

The program supports educators in embedding art, structured skill development, and employment readiness into meaningful learning experiences — helping students move toward long-term career pathways aligned with their interests.

Implementation Pathways

Implementation Pathways

SCANA is intentionally flexible and can be implemented at different levels depending on the needs of a school, classroom, or community. Each pathway maintains the core framework while allowing for meaningful adaptation.

Important note: To ensure fidelity and shared language, SCANA implementation is supported through guided workshops and educator training led by its creator.

1. SCANA Classroom Integration

A structured, sustainable model that integrates SCANA language and sound-based opening and closing practices into daily classroom routines. This pathway supports consistent regulation, communication, and reflective practice within existing instructional time.

2. SCANA Workshop Model

Single-session or short-series workshops that introduce students or staff to SCANA tools through guided sound, structured reflection, and interactive learning experiences. This format is ideal for advisory periods, enrichment programs, or focused skill-building sessions.

3. SCANA Skills Program

An expanded arts-based transition model that integrates creative skill development, career exploration, and — where applicable — partnerships with museum institutions and the broader art sector. This pathway supports students in developing employment-ready skills aligned with their interests and long-term goals.

4. SCANA for School Teams

A team-based adaptation designed for educators and administrators. This pathway builds shared language, regulation strategies, and reflective practices that strengthen collaboration, staff wellness, and school culture.
